What is a Big Sit you might ask? Well, a Big Sit is kind of like a tailgate, but for birding instead of a sporting event. Traditionally, Big Sits are twenty-four hour events, but the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin will be doing a mini 2-hour event instead.

A tally of all bird species seen from a 17-foot diameter circle will be kept. Attendees will be set up near a prairie area of the cemetery where the birding is often quite good. People are welcome to join us for some or all of the Big Sit, or just come say hi and then explore the rest of the cemetery which is filled with incredible Milwaukee history and good birding.

When you enter at the main entrance on Lincoln Avenue, follow the yellow lined road until you see arrow signs directing you to our event. The signs will say “Event This Way.”

What to expect: You can bring lawn chairs and have a relaxing morning looking at birds. We’ll be sitting in the lawn. We’ll have binoculars you can borrow and spotting scopes for your use too. We’ll explain the rules of a Big Sit, but the best rule of all is that you are free to stay for the whole morning, or leave to go explore as you wish. Be on time or come late – it’s all up to you.

This is a good event for anyone with limited mobility, as even the exploring can be done from paved roads -- in or out of a vehicle. It’s also great for anyone trying to get in their steps for the day as the cemetery is huge.

Bring snacks and beverages (non-alcoholic, please) for yourself, or to share, and it will really have that tailgate feel.
